Content hubs are special corners within the FB app that aggregate curated content related to specific culturally relevant moments and holidays to engage users and elevate voices within communities. Each Hub presents hero artwork at the top that conveys the spirit of the holiday and sets the tone for the scrolling experience. We viewed each project brief as an opportunity to collaborate with new artists - injecting diverse perspectives and styles into the app.
Celebrating APAHM:
We partnered with local Bay Area collage artist and animator, Geoff J. Kim, to create a hopeful, resilient animated header that represents, at least partially, the API diaspora community in the U.S.
In order to resonate with more users we leveraged animated collage to create dynamic narratives that showcased different people and ideas in limited visual real estate within the app, all under 10 seconds.
Lift Black Voices Hub:
Black Futures Book Release
Animated collage header artwork to announce the release of Black Futures.
“Black Futures is an American anthology of Black art, writing, and other creative work, edited by writer Jenna Wortham and curator Kimberly Drew. Writer Teju Cole, singer Solange Knowles and activist Alicia Garza, who cofounded Black Lives Matter, are among the book's more than 100 contributors.“
The visual look and feel was inspired by the gradient varnish on the book cover design. Animation help from the good folks at The Furrow.
LBV Black History Month:
We worked with Photographer Frank Frances to build and shoot these deeply conceptual still life scenes for the Lift Black Voices header art during BHM. “An important consideration for the objects was to depict nods to the vastness of Blackness and its evolving history. There is certainly a never ending wave of thoughts, concerns, pride, and hopefulness that each object gives me personally.” - Frank Frances
